How to write a cover letter?
A professional cover letter typically follows a standard format.
Here’s a basic structure you can use:
- The header at the top of the page should include your name, address, phone number, email address and LinkedIn (if you have one).
- The date of writing the cover letter and your address (this is optional as the hiring manager will see when you have applied, and many applications are online).
- The cover letter should address the letter to a specific person if possible (e.g., “Dear Mr. Smith”; this may be on the job advertisement or on LinkedIn). If you don’t know the name, you can use a general salutation like “To Whom It May Concern:”.
Introduction
Begin with a strong opening sentence that mentions the specific position you’re applying for. In the opening paragraph, include a summary of your relevant skills and experience. It is essential to grab the reader’s attention at this point and make them want to read more. Ideally, you will highlight some essential requirements in the job advertisement. Include why you would like to work for this company and how you would be an excellent fit for the organisation you are applying for, including how you align with their values.
2nd paragraph
The 2nd paragraph should highlight your skills, ensuring you go through the essential and desirable requirements for the role. If not previously mentioned, ensure you detail the benefits you have brought to the business and highlight experience relevant to the role.
However, if you do not have the relevant experience, but have other aspects, such as education or volunteering, include this here (and skip including paragraph 3 in your cover letter).
Additionally, highlight your achievements throughout your career (education or volunteering) relevant to the role. I would usually recommend writing it in bullet points to make it stand out, be easily read, and be more visually appealing.
3rd paragraph
The 3rd paragraph should include any qualifications, education, training or memberships relevant to the position you are applying for and how it will benefit the business through the skills and knowledge you have learned. I would also advise to include IT skills relevant for the role here.
Closing paragraph
Ensure you express enthusiasm for the position and the company. Mention that you would love to discuss the role further.
- Thank the employer for considering your application.
Use a closing greeting, such as “Sincerely” or “Best Regards,” followed by your full name.
- If submitting a physical copy, leave space for your signature and sign. If submitting electronically, you can type your name.
Always remember to tailor the content of your cover letter to the specific job and company. Additionally, using keywords from the job description and showcase, how your experiences align with the company’s values and needs. Also, keep it concise and focused, aiming for about one page in length.
